Our Place: Ephraim Children Responding to Community

2018

In these works, Granary Arts collaborated with members of the community and students of Ephraim Elementary School to reflect our place and our connection to that place.

At Granary’s Workshop Wednesday, a free art workshop for children and families, individuals were asked to depict their favorite place in Ephraim. These places could be as specific or vague, well-known or undisclosed as the artist chose. The drawings show that some of our favorite places in Ephraim can be tracked down on a map, while others must be discovered through curious play, and may never be known to anyone else. Another project looked to Ephraim’s Main Street for inspiration. In less than two miles, Main Street provides a diverse and familiar corridor for Ephraim City residents, which are recreated here in paper mosaic.

Students at Ephraim Elementary School used their memories of day-to-day life to map out their town. Starting with places they know extremely well (home and school), they branched out to include the homes of friends, parks and stores, favorite trees, open spaces where they play, yards with barking dogs on the walk home from school, and the little nooks and crannies that only they would know. Other students headed east to Ephraim Canyon to create watercolor paintings of the aspens that grow on the Wasatch Plateau. Students painted the trees in different seasons of the year, and some tell their own stories through the carvings in the bark.

Workshop Wednesday is a free art workshop designed for kids and families. Projects invite students to explore a variety of fine art mediums, materials, and processes.
