Katie Hargrave + Meredith Laura Lynn / Over Look / Under Foot / Reception

Granary Arts invites you to join us for the opening reception of “Over Look / Under Foot” an exhibition by artists Katie Hargrave and Meredith Laura Lynn.

Friday, October 8, 2021 / 6-8pm

In the spring of 2020, Katie Hargrave and Meredith Laura Lynn visited every national park in Utah and created a body of work that explores how these sites have been mediated by infrastructure. Roads, parking lots, scenic overlooks, and bathrooms make the parks accessible to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, but they also direct and manage the relationships those park goers have with the landscape. As nature writer Edward Abbey put it in Desert Solitaire, “You can’t see anything from a car.” There is a value judgement implicit in this statement. Abbey and others equate a certain connection to nature with spirituality, purity, and a unique kind of enlightenment, but that sort of experience in the outdoors deliberately excludes most park visitors. Using a state with a wide variety of public lands as a springboard, Hargrave and Lynn explore all five Utah National Parks and consider the complexities of a relationship to landscape that is heavily mediated by vehicles, cameras, and our own nostalgia.

The New Beehive / Reception

Granary Arts invites you to join us for the opening reception of “The New Beehive” a group exhibition of 30 Utah-based artists.

Friday, October 8, 2021 / 6-8pm

The New Beehive is a contemporary approach to The Grand Beehive, a 1980 exhibition that explored representations of the beehive symbol in various aspects of Utah culture. The New Beehive exhibition, presented by the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, is a collaboration between the Folk Arts and Visual Arts programs—it brings together the work of 30 Utah-based artists who exemplify the diversity of artistic expression in visual media and craft found statewide. The artists were invited to create a unique artwork employing the beehive and associated imagery as a concept, motif, or metaphor. The resulting pieces are a collection of deeply personal interpretations of what it means to be a resident of the Beehive State in the 21st century.

INCLUDED ARTISTS
Linda Bergstrom, Virginia Catherall, Michelle Franzoni Thorley, Daniel George, Lily & Michael Havey, Jann Haworth, Kate Ithurralde, Tzvi Izaksonas, Abraham Kimball, Lenka Konopasek, Jamie Kyle, Adam Larsen, Sarah May, Sarah Morton, Alison Neville, Mercedes Ng, Lola Reyes, Humberto Sanchez Conejo, Heidi Somsen, Julie Strong, Danielle Susi, John Tavoian, Douglas Tolman, Kalani Tonga, Jeremiah Tuchyner, Justin Wheatley, Laura Sharp Wilson, Rebecca Woolston, Ashton Young, and MönSr Yusef.

Wendy Wischer + Brenda Bowen / Evaporated: Explorations in Art, Science, and Salt

Granary Arts invites you to join us for Evaporated: Explorations in Art, Science, and Salt a two-person exhibition by artists Wendy Wischer and Brenda Bowen
Wednesday, May 19 – Friday, September 17, 2021

Bonneville Salt Flats is a vast and dynamic perennial salt pan in northwest Utah. It is a rapidly changing system responding to variations in rain, wind, evaporation, and groundwater flux; and also to a century of land-speed racing, potash mining, and recreation.

Within the lure of place, there exists a diverse set of stakeholders who will benefit from deeper understandings of the social and natural systems and from expanded perceptions and communication which hopefully will lead to better management decisions as none of the stakeholders benefit if the Bonneville Salt Flats diminish or even disappear.

Landscape as Autobiography: A Photography Workshop with Daniel George

Granary Arts along with artist Daniel George invites you to participate in Landscape as Autobiography: A Photography Workshop with Daniel George.

Saturday April 10, 2021 / 9am-2pm

What types of stories can we read in the landscape, and how do our surroundings provide insights into our experiences as human beings? In what ways do the marks we make on the land reflect our values, practices, and cultures? Questions like these have been considered by photographic artists for the past several decades, and will be the central line of inquiry in this interactive workshop. Together we will look at photographs and discuss ways in which image-makers approach depicting landscape through their artwork. We will then use this dialogue as our creative prompt as we exit the gallery to make photographs of our own, followed by a conversation about these images.

Participants are asked to bring a camera and wear clothing/shoes that are comfortable for walking, as we will be out in the landscape making photographs as part of this workshop.

Please note, this workshop will overlap lunchtime. Lunch will not be provided, participants may pack a lunch or purchase something nearby.

This workshop is free and open to the public, but space if limited. Email info@granaryarts.org to claim your spot!

Granary Arts invites you to join us for God To Go West a solo exhibition by artist Daniel George.
Wednesday, February 10, 2021 – Friday, April 30, 2021

God to Go West explores the contemporary landscape of Utah in relationship to the state’s religious history. After their arrival to the area in the mid-1800’s, Mormon settlers and their progeny named, or in many cases renamed, more places and geographic features than any other group or people. The nomenclature directly references their books of scripture, the Bible and The Book of Mormon. Because names have the ability to mediate qualities and meaning attached to a place, and are a vital part of individual and collective memory, it is evident the early settlers intended to create a utopia by association.

“I learned sourdough bread making from a respectable book. My first month as a baker was really difficult because my dough would over-proof in my hot Los Angeles apartment. Over the course of a year, my bread began to look and taste pretty good. It wasn’t until recently that I started questioning the idea of European “artisanry,” specifically in the world of baking. In response, I made videos, photographs, and sculptures that showcase fragments of my baking process, while recognizing my Colombian heritage through colors, rhythms, and dancing. The bread I make is Colombian American sourdough bread.” – Steven Stallings Cardenas

This body of work explores the role of the Muslim woman in a changing Islamic society, and seeks to understand her life behind the veil. A revolution has emerged in many Islamic countries, a battle over what is accepted and unaccepted, what is right and wrong. A younger generation of mostly educated women, newly aware of their rights and powers gifted to them through a glance into modernity, has catalyzed a growing struggle between traditional and contemporary gender roles and identity.
