About the Filmmaker
Born in the small town of King City, California, and raised up in the DIY Punk culture, Robert Machoian has been taking photographs his whole life and making films for well over a decade. Focusing on people living everyday lives whose stories often go untold, his work captures their unique vision to weave deeply personal stories that absorb their audiences. His films have premiered at Sundance, SXSW, LA and Tribeca Film Festival. In 2007 Machoian received a Bachelor’s degree from California State University Monterey Bay. While attending, he created an experimental narrative short film titled, Ella and the Astronaut, alongside collaborator Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck, which went on to play festivals internationally. Machoian received a Masters of Fine Arts in 2010 from University of California Davis, where he once again collaborated with Rodrigo Ojeda-Beck, to create, Charlie and the Rabbit, which was accepted into the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and has since gone on to play film festivals internationally, winning Best Short Film at the Festival International de curtmetratges Mas Sorrer in Costa Brava, Spain. Machoian’s recent film, The Minors, received the Short Film Special Jury Award for Directing from Sundance and screens with the 2019 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour. Machoian is also currently an Associate Professor of photography in the Design Department at Brigham Young University.
